I want to pass motion
In the past few months, I’ve taken my mom in and out of the hospital and in all instances before she was warded, she spent a few hours in the emergency ward to be monitored. I would wait around and take a peek at her every now and then.
One thing I found quite strange with many of the patients is that even in their hour of distress they can say, “saya mahu berak” or I want to pass motion. I would think that with all that pain and anxiety, that would be the last thing on their mind.
One man landed in the emergency ward after some heavy drinking (alcohol) with his buddies. He was in a state of semi-consciousness, and the doctor kept asking him to open his eyes. After some time, he struggled to get out of the bed, and the nurses tried to put him back and there was quite a commotion going on there. He was a foreigner and nobody could understand what he was saying. Then one of his buddies said that he wanted to pass motion. So then the struggle ended as they realised he only wanted to get up to go to the toilet.
Then on another occasion, I saw a man sitting on the bed with an oxygen mask on his face. I think he had a heart problem. Then he called the nurse to tell her that he wanted to pass motion and a bed pan was given to him to ease himself. Then another man on the bed next to him said he wanted to pass motion but he can’t. It was agonising and he grumbled and grumbled the whole time.
Another time, a lady was wheeled into the normal ward (not the emergency) and the first thing she wanted to do when she reached her bed was to pass motion.
I wonder if this is how the phrase “Oh shit!” came about.
