My mom was discharged from the hospital yesterday. This was the fourth time that she was in and out of the hospital in two months. She’s one tough cookie, my mom is. The doctor finally found the problem and clipped it. We hope and pray there will not be a recurrence in future. However, the doctor said that if the problem persists they have a plan for her. Hopefully we need not use that “plan”.
I got to know a few of the patients who were on the beds beside my mother at the hospital over the past two months. One of them, Sabine, looked like a Eurasian woman but she was actually from East Germany. We got to talking and I asked her why she was in the hospital. Her reply was “complications, complications”. Nothing seems to be done for her. She said she couldn’t speak much English, so I didn’t talk much with her initially. The second time I saw her, she was in a more talkative mood and she told me that she had a haemorroids operation done in Philippines but the doctor didn’t do a proper job, so she ended up with an infection. When she received treatment for the infection here at the hospital, she ended up with more complications. Anyway, that’s her story and I’m not sure how true it is. I asked her why she didn’t go back to Germany as it’s a welfare state and all her medical treatment would be taken care of. Over here, she has nobody to take care of her. Her only reply was that she has travelled and lived here many years and she liked it here. Anyway, she threw a tantrum and refused to eat lunch because she complained that the hospital food was lousy.
Another patient was a Myanmarese. She was brought into the ward in a state of coma. Her head was shaven and she had a nasty bump on the side of her forehead and her hands and legs were attached to plank like things. She looked to me like she was badly beaten up. There was also some kind of pumping machine attached to her mouth. At one stage, while we were talking to my mom (during visiting hours), I heard some gurgling sounds coming from her. Then it got louder and then I saw liquid coming out of her mouth. Immediately, I called the nurse and I expected the nurse to rush to her aid, but it appeared to me like she treated it as a non-emergency. I mean, the poor lady could have choked to death. Maybe, I’ve been watching too much TV. Recently when my mom was admitted to the hospital again, we saw the Myanmarese lady again. She’s still in a coma and some hair has grown on her head already. My mom said that she heard that the Myanmarese was beaten up when she entered Malaysia.
I also got talking to another lady who had Stage 4 stomach cancer. Looking at her, I didn’t think that she has cancer. She had a cheerful disposition and appeared a happy person. She gave my mom a packet of Milo because we were not around and my mom was feeling hungry. She told us that she had the cancer for six months and it has now spread to her liver. But it’s a rare cancer which cannot be treated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. And the hospital can’t do much for her except give her blood transfusions. She said she is now seeking treatment at a private hospital and the doctor is from Singapore. I didn’t see her after she was discharged so I hope she is well.
One young lady was in hospital because she got struck by a parang on the head by a snatch thief. What a terrible thing to happen to anyone. I’m not too sure what happened to this lady as she was still in hospital when my mom was discharged. I was a victim of a snatch thief once but fortunately nothing serious happened to me. I just scraped a knee when I fell on the road.
I suppose when you see all the sick and injured patients in the hospital, you want to thank God that you are healthy and that you have not suffered any bodily injuries at the hands of the evil ones.
