Trip to durian orchard in Mantin

June 30th, 2009 Becklee No comments

Jo’s brother owns an orchard somewhere in Mantin.  On Sunday, she and her husband Richard took Ah Loot and I there to have a durian feast.  Her brothers and their families were also there.  We took the highway, not really sure which one, I think it was the Grand Saga highway.

We parked our cars near some shophouses and transferred into a 4WD vehicle as the road leading to the orchard is a dirt road and very hilly.

Guess what trees these are?  Rubber trees!!!  It’s been ages since I saw a rubber tree and yes, they still exist and people still tap rubber for a living.

Goodbye Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett

June 26th, 2009 Becklee 2 comments

When I switched on the radio this morning as I was driving to work, I heard the news  about the deaths of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.  It came as a total surprise to me to hear about Michael Jackson’s death as it was quite sudden.    I mean there had been rumours earlier that he had some health problems but none of them were confirmed.  Farrah Fawcett’s death on the other hand was expected as I knew she was dying of cancer.

Both these celebrities were idolised by millions as I was growing up.  I had posters of them in my room.  Michael Jackson was part of the Jackson 5 at that time.  At the same time, I was also a fan of the Osmonds.  I remember how I liked Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond rather than their brothers.  And I also wondered how Michael managed to retain his high pitched voice when Donny’s voice had already changed to a lower pitch as they grew older.   At that time, my favourite Michael Jackson song was “I’ll be there”.    As the years passed, it is amazing to see how Michael’s face had changed shape as well as colour so much so that you couldn’t recognise him if you saw pictures of him in his younger days.

Oh yes, several years ago he performed at a concert here in Kuala Lumpur  but I didn’t get to go to his concert because the tickets were too darn expensive.  However, by chance I managed to catch a glimpse of him when I was at a shopping centre.  I remember that there was a big crowd and I asked one of the spectators what was going on.   I was told that Michael Jackson would be making an appearance.  So I stood around and sure enough, he appeared.  I wasn’t sure if he was there for a press conference or what.

As for Farrah Fawcett, I remember having that famous poster of hers, the one of her in a red swim suit with a big smile and curly hair.  I didn’t miss an episode of  “Charlie’s Angels”  because I really liked looking at her beautiful face (kind of like wish I was as beautiful as her).

Those are but memories now as I say goodbye to both Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.

Where to find food in Malacca

June 25th, 2009 Becklee 1 comment

In my earlier posting here, I wrote about Ah Loot’s eating spree in Malacca but she couldn’t remember some of the places. Her former classmate, Dr K has given more information and this is what he has to add to that posting:

The stall under the tree is at Jalan Siantan, off Jalan Tengkera (beside the Masjid). It is run by an ex-High School Teacher. Food available include Laksa, Mee Siam, Pie Tee, Nasi Lemak, Nyonya Popiah (with egg skin), Cendol and if you are lucky, a few types of nyonya kuih.

Opposite is the nyonya kuih factory, called Baba Charlie. It was featured in the Star a couple of weeks ago. The variety of kuih available is amazing. We were unfortunate that day because a busload of tourists came earlier than us and bought a lot of the kuih.

Try also the food at Pokok Ketapang. (Beside Shell Station and opposite Pay Fong School in Jalan Tengkera). You can find Taukuah Hailam, Curry Chicken Rice, Carrot Cake, Siew Mai (different from the shop type), Hei Piah, etc, etc.

Also, I heard people say you can get “Belangkas Eggs” in Portuguese Settlement. This is an acquired taste. The “Belangkas Eggs” have to be prepared with a special chilli concoction. This is the “caviar” of the East.

Happy food hunting and eating!
