What food to buy in Malacca

March 30th, 2009 Becklee 1 comment
Ah Loot came back from her weekend in Malacca with her old classmates and guess what she brought home?  The best bak chang in the world… as my late brother (and now Melissa) used to say whenever he likes a certain food and in this case “this bak chang is to die for”….

On the left is pulut hitam and we boil this pulut hitam with the gula melaka next to it and coconut santan to make a real nice sweet dessert.  Err, do we mix the gula melaka with the pulut hitam or am I mistaken?

Spread this kaya on toasted bread with butter and you get a real mouth watering breakfast.

Now, I don’t understand why but Ah Loot and a lot of Malacca people insist that the best Kopi-O comes from Malacca.  I’m not much of a Kopi drinker but I tried this one.  Well, this one I can give a skip.

These are some of the nyonya kuih Ah Loot bought from Baba Charlie’s place.

Ah Loot’s makan spree in Malacca

Ah Loot spent the weekend with her old classmates in Malacca.  Most of them stayed at the Everly Resort Hotel.  She stayed at another classmates’s house instead of here.

They had dinner at the Malacca Club to celebrate the birthdays of all those classmates who turn 55 this year.  During Earth Hour, all the lights were switched off and they continued their dinner with tealights.

On Sunday, they started their makan spree at this street stall, somewhere in Tengkera/Pantai 2 area.  Ah Loot isn’t really sure where it is exactly.  But it is packed with customers, must queue up one.

So many different types of kuih to choose from.  I got a taste of these because Ah Loot packed some home.  Unfortunately, one of the kuih turned bad.

Then, they proceeded to Jonker Street.

They serve satay babi (barbecued pork).  Looks nice.

No satay is complete without the cucumber, big onions and compact rice.  Can’t show you the compact rice because the picture was so blur, you can’t see much of anything.

The satay sauce is different from the one in KL, as it has a bit of sourish taste.

Lastly, they ended up at one of their former classmate’s house for durian.  The durian costs RM12 per kilo, real expensive.  But doesn’t it look simply delicious?  Yummy, yummy.

What did I finally do?

March 28th, 2009 Becklee 1 comment

Earth Hour has come and gone in Malaysia.  I went out with my mom at 7.30 p.m. to a shopping mall nearby.  I had thought of going to the Curve but then it rained earlier and I was felt too lazy to venture too far away.  Ah Loot has gone to Malacca and the younger members in my family had their own plans.   So, there was just me and my mom.

The mall that we went to didn’t participate in the Earth Hour and there weren’t many shoppers there either.   We went to Guardian Pharmacy to get some things and then to McDonald’s for ice cream.  Finally, we went to Giant supermarket to shop for groceries.  And then we stopped by Secret Recipe for some cake.  All the shops there were fully lighted, so I guess there’s not much awareness going on here.   We went home at around 10 p.m. and my two cats were waiting for us outside the house in total darkness.  They must be wondering what’s going on.
